현대 기술은 매끄럽고 투명한 환경을 지향하며, 블랙박스 모델이나 반도체처럼 내부의 작동을 감춘 채 표면의 완결된 이미지만을 제시한다. 그러나 이 표면 아래에는 무엇을 보고 지울것 인가를 끊임없이 분류하는 작동이 있다. AI 이미지 세분화(Segmentation) 기술은 경계를 설정하고 대상을 명명함으로써 세계를 분할하고, 그 위에 의미를 부여한다. 경계가 명확할수록, 더 많은 자본 및 권력과 연결될 가능성이 높을수록, 데이터는 이미지 위에서 독자적인 명칭을 부여받고 강화된다. 반면, 해상도가 낮거나 일시적인 존재들, 라벨링되지 못한 픽셀들―분류되지 않는 노이즈들―은 제거의 대상으로 간주된다.
본 작업은 세계로부터 밀려난 존재들의 잔재인 '노이즈' 속에서 새로운 서사의 단서를 포착한다. 구글 스트리트뷰, 도시 풍경, 신체 등 다양한 이미지를 대상으로, AI 기반의 세분화(Segmentation) 알고리즘을 실험하고, 이 과정에서 경계에서 이탈하거나 분류되지 못한 픽셀들을 수집했다. 이 과정을 통해 기술적 인식 너머에 남겨진 흔적을 'Mx.NO'라는 존재로 재구성하였다.
Mx.NO는 관객의 흔적, 스트리트뷰의 유실된 정보, 그리고 감지되지 못한 이미지 경계들을 통합하며, 지도에 없는 경로를 생성하고, 또 다른 방식의 세계를 만들기 시작한다. 관객은 리모컨을 사용해 9채널 CRT 디스플레이로 구성된 설치에서 기술이 지우고 남긴 픽셀 위를 탐색하게 되며, 이 과정을 통해 Mx.NO의 흔적을 추적한다. 관객의 행위는 삭제된 이미지의 틈에서 새로운 내러티브를 발견하고, 기술적 정상성의 바깥에서 지워진 존재들을 다시 호출하는 경험으로 이어진다.
Contemporary technology strives for a seamless, transparent environment, presenting a polished surface while concealing its inner workings, much like black box models or semiconductors. Yet beneath this surface lies a constant mechanism of selection—what to see and what to erase. AI segmentation technology draws boundaries and assigns labels to divide the world and assign meaning. The clearer the boundary and the closer it is to capital and power, the more likely that data will receive a name and be reinforced. In contrast, low-resolution, ephemeral, or unlabeled pixels—those considered "noise"—are seen as disposable.
This work captures narrative fragments from such noise—the residual traces of entities pushed out of the visible world. Using AI-based segmentation algorithms, it experiments with images from Google Street View, urban landscapes, and human bodies, collecting pixels that fall outside of classification. These remnants are reconfigured into a being called Mx.NO, a spectral figure assembled from what lies beyond technical recognition.
Mx.NO integrates traces of the audience, missing data from Street View, and unregistered image boundaries, generating paths that don’t exist on any map and initiating alternative ways of worldmaking. Viewers explore these residual pixels using a remote control across a 9-channel CRT display installation, tracing the presence of Mx.NO. This act of navigation leads to the discovery of new narratives within the gaps of erased images—and to the experience of summoning back those erased existences from outside technological normality.
