항아리의 표면에는 과거와 현재, 미래를 연결하는 이미지가 투영되며 다양한 시간선을 서로 중첩시킵니다. 팔영산, 태백산, 서울의 야경 등 현재의 시간이 담긴 강과 산, 그리고 도시의 풍경이 항아리의 표면에 나타났다가 사라집니다.
또 다른 장면에서는 과거 선조들이 보고, 듣고, 사랑해온 것들을 새겨넣은 무늬가 인공지능 기술을 거쳐 생기 넘치는 이미지로 변화합니다. 작품에서는 대표적으로 분청사기 상감모란문호의 무늬를 활용하였습니다. 모란의 형태를 닮은 무늬가 꽃으로 피어나다가 점차 긴 직선의 이미지로 변화합니다. 과거에서 미래까지의 지속되는 시간을 나타내듯 길게 늘어나며 항아리를 감싸는 무늬는 귀얄기법에서 영감을 받은 표현기법입니다. 이렇게 과거와 현재, 그리고 미래를 품은 항아리는 초현실적인 공간의 풍경에서 끊임없이 변화하며 부유합니다.
이 작품은 한국의 오래된 문화예술인 항아리의 가치를 탐구하는 동시에 미래 시대와의 연결을 시도합니다. 서로 다른 시간선에 존재하는 풍경들의 중첩시켜, 생경한 풍경을 통해 새로운 세계를 향한 기대를 나타냅니다.
본 작업은 우박 스튜디오의 콘텐츠, 시각, 기술 연구의 연장선에서 제작된 공공 예술작품입니다. 넓게 공감할 수 있는 이야기를 찾는 것은 우리에게 중요한 요소 중 하나입니다. 때문에 우리는 지속적으로 타 분야의 전문가들과의 협업 경험을 통해 다양한 요소들을 습득하고 연구하는 것을 중요하게 생각합니다. Hang-A-Ri는 2023. 아뜰리에 광화 : 봄으로부터, 광화문광장 미디어 파사드 기획전에서 상영되었으며, 제12회 서울시 좋은빛상 공모전 최우수상을 수상하였습니다.
Projected onto the surface of the jar are images that connect past, present, and future—superimposing different timelines. Scenes such as the rivers, mountains, and cityscapes of modern-day Korea—including Paryeongsan, Taebaeksan, and the night skyline of Seoul—appear and fade across the jar’s contours, weaving layers of temporal experience.
In another sequence, traditional patterns that reflect what past generations saw, heard, and loved are reimagined through AI, transforming into vivid, animated visuals. The work prominently references the inlaid peony design of a Buncheong ware jar (buncheong sagi sanggam moranmunho). These motifs—resembling blooming peonies—gradually evolve into long, linear forms that wrap around the jar. This transformation evokes the continuity of time stretching from the past into the future, and draws inspiration from the traditional gwiyal brush-slip technique.
Floating through a surreal, dreamlike space, the jar becomes a vessel that holds and merges multiple temporalities. It not only honors the legacy of Korean ceramics, but also proposes a vision that links traditional culture with future possibilities. By layering landscapes from distinct temporal planes, the work invites viewers to reflect on a new, unfamiliar world shaped by overlapping time.
This public art project is an extension of Ubac Studio’s ongoing research in content, aesthetics, and technology. Finding stories that resonate broadly is central to our practice. We value interdisciplinary collaboration as a way to deepen our understanding and broaden our methods, and continue to explore new modes of expression through such partnerships.Hang-A-Ri was screened as part of Atelier Gwanghwa: From Spring, a media façade exhibition at Gwanghwamun Square in 2023, and was awarded the Grand Prize at the 12th Seoul Good Light Awards.
